ABOUT THE COVER

On the front cover is a picture of a bench at the Quiet Garden at the Woman’s Club at 118 Sullivan Street in Punta Gorda.  This garden was designed and built by members of the Punta Gorda Garden Club in 2006.

The Woman’s Club building was constructed in 1927 on land donated by Judge William Fennimore Cooper of Cook County, Illinois.  It was deeded over to the Punta Gorda Historical Society in 2005, which installed a new irrigation system.  This encouraged PGGC to form a committee to develop plans for the garden. A committee including Elise Haymans, Carolyn Honour, and Kathy Zimber sketched out a plan to beautify the 29 ft X 92 ft area.

Volunteers from TEAM Punta Gorda, PGGC, and the PG Historical Society cleared the lot of stumps and bricks.  Soil was amended and added, brick walks and rock walls were installed, and large trees donated as memorial trees were set into place.  PGGC members donated cuttings that were delivered to Avon Park Garden Therapy Program, whose members cultivated them.  Later they were picked up and planted.   The garden is currently tended on the fourth Monday of each month by volunteers from PGGC.

Many thanks to Janet Robinson for taking the recent photo and to both her and Sandy Bruglio for the interesting treatment of the picture to make it appear to be drawn and painted by hand.
